Qantas changes carry on luggage allowance

For those who love a weekend jaunt interstate, it’s the change that spells the end of having to choose between outfits and wasting precious time staring at the baggage carousel.

Australia’s national carrier has overhauled its long-held hand luggage policy, which may mean some travellers need nothing but what they can carry on to the plane themselves for a weekend away.

Qantas has announced it will allow travellers to take a heavier carry-on bag on board for domestic flights from March 25.

Currently, the airline allows passengers to travel with two bags, each weighing 7kg, meaning travellers have to juggle two bags or face checking in a bigger suitcase, wasting time of their getaway in a painful wait at the luggage carousel.

Although the weight limit is still the same, Qantas will soon allow passengers to have up to 10kg in a single bag, with a second bag if needed to make up the remaining weight.

For frequent flyer Cassie Silver, above, the biggest benefit will be not having to cut down on travel luxuries, including an extra book, a coat or a spare pair of shoes.

“An extra three kilos is loads, it means I don’t have to sacrifice things any more,” she said.
