Police lay charges after chase crash

A 37-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm after allegedly crashing his car during a police pursuit.

The incident occurred about 9.30am on Friday, March 13, in Spencer Park after police alleged they signalled the driver of a Subaru WRX to stop.

During the police chase, the driver lost control of the car in wet conditions and slammed into a power pole outside a house on Ulster Road, seriously injuring himself and a female passenger.

The impact of the crash destroyed the power pole and brought powerlines down across neighbouring properties.

Ulster Road was closed while firefighters and paramedics freed two people from the wreckage.

The driver and a woman in her mid-30s suffered multiple serious injuries and were taken to Albany Health Campus.

Last week, the man was charged with dangerous driving causing GBH in circumstances of aggravation, failing to stop in circumstances of aggravation, and no authority to drive.

He is due to appear at Albany Magistrate’s Court on April 16.
