Police block Durlacher Street for alleged domestic violence incident that saw knife pulled outside Rigters IGA

Part of Durlacher Street, outside Rigters IGA, was blocked by police vehicles on Sunday afternoon when officers were dealing with an alleged domestic violence incident that saw a knife pulled out in public.

Shortly before 4pm on Sunday, police vehicles swarmed to Durlacher Street after receiving a report of a domestic violence incident between a man and a woman.

Police allege a 32-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were having an altercation close to IGA when officers arrived at the scene and the woman produced a knife.

Acting officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Stuart Gerreyn said the man was issued a police order to keep him away from the woman but during the course of police inquiries at the scene the woman produced a knife and was arrested.

“Police attended as a result of several calls in regards to a man assaulting a woman near Rigters IGA on Durlacher Street. On police response they had seemed to have separated but remained quite volatile towards each other,” he said.

The man and woman were Geraldton locals residing at the same address. They are both known to police under different circumstances.

Sen. Sgt Gerreyn said it was concerning that someone would pull a weapon in a public area and in front of innocent people and potentially children.

“The risk to the other members of the community was quite great and if police hadn’t have got there as quickly as they did who knows what may have happened,” he said.

The 31-year-old woman was bailed after being charged with being armed in a way to cause fear and is due to face Geraldton Magistrates Court in September.
