Vegans are enjoying delicious treats in Albany — and plenty of locals are discovering their passion for plant-based food.
Albany woman Sarah Jefferis, who has been a vegan since 2017, has noticed more vegan food options cropping up at Albany restaurants.
She has put together an Instagram page called Albany Vegan Eats to promote all the available vegan food options around town.
Meanwhile, chef and Alkaline Cafe owner Melissa Homewood is proudly promoting her venue as the only one in Albany with a 100 per cent vegan menu.
“I think as time goes on, people are more aware of diets and disease and that’s probably why people are educating themselves more and now choosing to live healthier,” she said.
Ms Homewood said she left her hospitality job three years ago when she “got bored” of cooking the same food over and over again.
“And then I stumbled into plant-based food and I found vegan food to be more enjoyable to cook,” she said.
Ms Jefferis said a lot of restaurants in Albany which did not offer vegan options could easily whip up something when asked.
“Most restaurants I come visit can simply tweak their menu when I ask for no mayo or eggs,” she said.
“So far, everyone has been very accommodating.”
