Pilbara health specialties, women’s health win funds

Specialist health services will continue to be provided at Karratha Health Campus for at least the next four years under an early Budget announcement from the State Government.

Health Minister Roger Cook today announced an additional $13.8 million funding for the Pilbara Health Initiative to ensure the ongoing delivery of specialist services at the Karratha facility.

Specialist roles covered by the funding include emergency medicine specialists, a consultant surgeon, consultant paediatrician, specialist obstetrician and community midwife.

The funds will also provide further midwifery care for pregnant women in the inland Pilbara, outreach services in Roebourne, Onslow, Tom Price and Paraburdoo and a new women’s health program in Tom Price and Newman.

Mr Cook and Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said the extra funding would enhance the healthcare options of people living in the Pilbara.

“Providing access to quality health care services is essential to maintaining strong regional communities and this $13.8 million funding commitment from the McGowan Government ensures residents of the Pilbara will continue to have access to a range of specialist services,” Mr Cook said.

“Providing access to medical specialists close to home means patients are spared the stress of travelling to Perth and leaving family and community support.”
