Perth climate: Perth set to swelter as mercury pushes 40C

Forget slip, slop, slapping, people of Perth. Stay inside, close your blinds and lock the doors as it’s about to get hot. Stinking hot.

Today is set to be an absolute scorcher with the mercury tipped to hit 40C mid-afternoon, bringing with it an “extreme” fire risk to Perth’s coastal plain.

But don’t expect any cool respite from the Fremantle Doctor this afternoon.

Senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology Gianni Colangelo tracked the spell down to an extreme heatwave driving very hot, dry and windy conditions in the northern parts of WA.

“As our winds turn east, northeast, more to the northerly direction we’re going to drag down a lot of that heat down towards the South West corner of the State. That includes areas around Geraldton, Lancelin, Perth and even the South West corner of the State,” he said.

Mr Colangelo explained the atypical heat movement pushing all the way to the coast has sucked the freshness from the afternoon seabreeze.

The unusual heatwave is forecast to continue to travel down to the South West on Thursday, plunging the usually more temperate areas of Manjimup and Pemberton into mid to late 30C temperatures.

By week’s end summer will loosen its white-hot grip on Perth, with temperatures dropping down to a maximum of 25C on Friday and Saturday, before inching back up to 27C on Sunday and back into the 30s on Monday.
