Perth Scorchers WBBL veteran Lauren Ebsary fights to stave off swan song

Perth Scorchers know exactly what is required in this weekend’s games against Adelaide Strikers in Alice Springs if they are to keep alive their Women’s Big Bash League title aspirations.

But the stakes are even higher for veteran Lauren Ebsary, whose career ends when the Scorchers’ campaign finishes.

The Perth women enter today’s and tomorrow’s clashes with the sixth-placed Strikers in fifth position but will hope to climb above Melbourne Renegades into the top four with two wins.

Gun batter Elyse Villani (hamstring) is expected to return for the crunch games to end the regular season, but Nicole Bolton remains out after taking leave for personal reasons.

“I’m pretty sure we just need to keep winning,” Ebsary said.

“I know there’s lots of other results and stuff like that but as far as I’m aware we’ve just got to get the two and we’ll sort of look after our own destiny.

“This could potentially be it. The curtain will close and then I’ll drift off into the sunset.

“We are probably in the last couple of weeks at least so I’m dreading going back to work to a 9-5 job and not living this professional cricket life that the girls live.”

Ebsary is set to return to South Australia but won’t be playing club cricket as she embarks on the next chapter of her life.

The 35-year-old concedes it’s been a topsy turvy season for the Scorchers, who have been runners-up the past two seasons.

Ebsary is keen to stand up in the middle order if she gets the chance and said improving her fielding had been a focus after some dropped chances.

“I haven’t really made the impact that I’d certainly like,” she said. “I’ve got pretty high standards in my own ability and would really have liked to have contributed a bit more so certainly for this weekend hopefully I can.”

Ebsary and her teammates will wear an Aboriginal shirt design from artist Kevin Bynder.

“They look incredible,” she said. “I can’t wait to get to Alice.”
