Perth Lynx defeat UC Capitals in WNBL Semi Final as Sami Whitcomb and Darcee Garbin lead the way

Perth Lynx are just one win away from their dream of playing in the WNBL grand final after winning the first match of their best of three semi final series against Canberra 91-77.

The Lynx entered the game having finished the regular season looking tired after playing seven games in 16 days across three states. But the relative luxury of a four-day break gave them renewed energy and their starter tore Canberra apart.

They will now travel to Tuggeranong for game two on Sunday in an attempt to secure their first grand final appearance since the 2015/16 season. But coach Ryan Petrik wasn’t getting carried away yet.

“It’s half time as far as we’re concerned,” Petrik said.

“We know they’ll go away and make adjustments. We also know we’ve got two bites at this when playing at home but we don’t want to have to rely on that. We want to make sure we don’t need that second bite. We can’t be getting up and about.”

Canberra started strongly but Marina Mabrey changed the game with a second quarter blitz that saw Perth take a 12-point lead after scores were level just two minutes earlier.

Sami Whitcomb was also crucial with seven points and five rebounds for the second quarter.

The Lynx found the perfect combination of attacking the paint and taking three-point shots. Known for being an attacking force, all of their weapons were on show as the starters ran wild and then they defended grandly.

Whitcomb was the dominant player on the court with 20 points and 11 rebounds as she chases a WNBL title to go with her two WNBA championships.

Mabrey finished with 19 points and Jackie Young continued her brilliant form with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists . Captain Darcee Garbin led her team superbly with 16 points and nine rebounds while Lauren Scherf had 15 points and eight rebounds.

“We needed something out of our bigs and they certainly delivered,” Petrik said.

“That made them play our style instead of us playing theirs. We did nothing for four days other than rest and that meant that our starters could play for longer. It made a difference.

“Sami Whitcomb can shoot it from anywhere and we know what Marina and Jackie can do too.”

The Lynx have had a tough time during finals with the club winning only two of their last 12 play-off games. But this is a vastly different squad.
