Perth Fashion Festival opens at Optus Stadium for 20th anniversary

Perth Fashion Festival bounced down at Optus Stadium last night with some of the country’s finest designers on the event’s biggest stage.

It was a spectacular way to celebrate two decades of the game-changing festival, which has helped cement WA’s reputation as a thriving creative hub.

Local favourite Morrison kicked off the show with a sweet smorgasbord of sorbet pastels.

Designer Kylie Radford said the high-summer range epitomised the Morrison aesthetic, with plenty of frills, raw edges and sheer, flouncy frocks. “It’s traditional Morrison — very feminine and playful,” she said.

Festival founder and director Mariella Harvey-Hanrahan said there had been enormous pressure to put the show together, with just 48 hours to “bump in” after the big footy final on Saturday. “Sport is culture and fashion is culture … it’s fantastic that they can collide but we have to be careful because they almost did collide,” she said.

The show, which made the most of the venue’s modern lighting, kicked plenty of goals.

The big crowd included the Festival’s Australian ambassador, Perth’s own princess Lindy Klim, and punters were treated to the WA debut of coveted Melbourne label Viktoria & Woods.

One Fell Swoop, a Perth label famous for its dramatic draping, stepped up alongside industry darling Dion Lee, who first showed at the festival in 2016, and Melbourne’s Scanlan Theodore.
