Percy hot on leaders’ heels in PGA

Cameron Percy shot a blemish-free 67 to be two behind the pacesetters at the PGA’s Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship in the Dominican Republic.

The Victorian carded birdies on the 10th, 15th and 17th to add to back-to-back ones on the third and fourth holes to be in a 10-way tie for seventh after Thursday’s first round.

It is a crowded leaderboard with American Tyler McCumber sharing the lead with compatriots Scott Harrington, Hudson Swafford and Austria’s Sepp Straka, after they all fired seven-under 65s.

A bogey at the penultimate hole dropped McCumber, the son of 10-time PGA Tour winner Mark McCumber, into a tie for the lead.

“It’s always a good sign when you’re hitting a lot of fairways and putting pretty well, so felt pretty in control of the round today and got some momentum going early and kind of carried it through,” said McCumber.

The four co-leaders were one shot clear of China’s Zhang Xinjun, who capped his round with three consecutive birdies, and American Joseph Bramlett.

Australians Rhein Gibson and Matt Jones are tied 78th, after posting one-under 71.
