Pakistan opener nursing heart condition

Pakistan star opener Abid Ali has been diagnosed with a heart condition after complaining of chest pain during a domestic first class match and then taken to hospital.

Pakistan’s cricket board (PCB) said 34-year-old Abid has acute coronary syndrome, which is associated with a sudden reduction or blockage of blood flow to the heart.

“Abid was taken immediately to a cardiac hospital where he was diagnosed,” the PCB said in a statement.

“He is under the care of consultant cardiologist who is liaising with PCB medical team regarding further treatment. He is currently stable.”

Abid has played 16 Test matches and six one-day internationals for Pakistan.

He was batting in a Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match in Karachi for Central Punjab against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday when he twice complained of discomfort.

Abid had reached 61 when he indicated pain around his shoulder and chest before team manager Ashraf Ali decided to take him to hospital for tests.

Abid had returned to domestic cricket following a recent Bangladesh tour where he was the Test player of the series with 263 runs at 87.66.

He has been the highest Test run-scorer for Pakistan since his debut in 2019 at the age of 31.

This year he is ranked fifth in the world with 695 runs in nine Tests at 48.87.

Abid is the only player in history to score a ton on Test and ODI debut.
