Outback bike tours to go way off the beaten track

Two brothers-in-law with a passion for motorcycles are expecting to attract tourists to the Goldfields-Esperance region with their start-up business.

Called Desert and Coastal Adventures Tours, the motorcycle tours will run from Laverton to Esperance, Coral Bay, and Uluru.

With nothing but the bitumen, bikes, and some basic supplies, Pat Thomas and Craig Bates said it was a surreal feeling riding through the remote desert and coastal regions.

The pair have been riding various routes every year since 2014.

“The business idea was right in front of us,” Mr Thomas said.

“We’ve done several trips over the last few years and bring a different group with us every time.

“Some people will do anything to come on the trip with us — if they get left behind it was almost like a murder because once you’ve done it you just want to go every year.”

The rides cover a range of experiences, which Mr Bates said would attract various tourists, from adrenaline junkies to people seeking historical and cultural experiences. “We’re looking to share the history of the region and the tracks we take actually retrace the steps of early explorers,” he said.

Mr Thomas runs an electrical refrigeration company in Laverton and Mr Bates operates a boat tuition business in Mandurah.

However, they expect their outback motorcycle and camping tourism experience will attract more than just WA tourists.

The business will be officially launched in April.
