High-profile races at Newmarket and Goodwood are under consideration for Marie’s Diamond following his narrow defeat in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday.

Mark Johnston’s juvenile disappointed when favourite for the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom last month, but bounced back to winning form at Chester and stepped up to Group Two level on Irish Derby day.

The Middleham Park Racing-owned colt hit the front in the final furlong before being mowed down late by Aidan O’Brien’s Van Beethoven, and connections hope he will enjoy his day in the sun at some stage this summer.

Tim Palin, racing manager for the owners, said: “He ran a great race. It was probably a bit frustrating as at the two-furlong pole it looked like he might win, but we went over there hoping for a place and that’s exactly what we got.

“He loves that fast ground and Silvestre (de Sousa) said six furlongs is fine for him, even though his pedigree suggests he’ll stay further.

“We’ll see how he is next week, but the obvious races for him are the July Stakes or the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket’s July meeting and then there’s the Richmond and the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood.

“They are all Group Two races and we’ll try to get a Group Two win to his name, rather than just being Group Two placed.”
