Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has apologised to the Manchester United fans after his side’s humiliating 4-0 defeat away to Everton.

Goals from Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne, and Theo Walcott condemned Solskjaer’s team to a fifth successive away game defeat in all competitions for the first time since March 1981.

The performance, as much as the result itself, underlined the task the Norwegian faces in restoring the club to former glories, with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville describing it as ‘rancid’ in his post-match analysis.

And Solskjaer believes it was only the supporters who showed their true colours at Goodison Park and could hold their heads up high.

“Everything went wrong today, we just didn’t perform, and we were beaten all over the pitch on the basics,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

“There’s no hiding place on the pitch in this shirt, and we weren’t good enough, it was not worthy of a Man United team.

“We have to hold our hands up and apologise on behalf of the club to the fans as they were the only ones with the badge who could hold their heads up and say they were Manchester United.

“My message them at the end was sorry, because they were class, and they always are while we have to realise talent has never been enough.”

And now for the Manchester derby…

With a Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports, Solskjaer insists it is the perfect opportunity to right the wrongs of the last week which has also seen them exit the Champions League to Barcelona.

“We are now sixth and a long way off where we want to be, and it’s a perfect chance to show everyone what we are all about against Man City,” added Solskjaer.

“We’ve got a big job to do, and we’ll do it because this club has been down before and we’ve got to pick ourselves up and it will happen.”
