NRL usurps AFL as Australia’s most popular sporting code on Twitter

The NRL has usurped the AFL as Australia’s most popular sporting code — at least on Twitter.

Aussies tweeted more about the NRL than they did about the AFL in 2021, according to data released by Twitter.

#NRL finished second only to #Tokyo2020 when it came to Australia’s most popular sporting hashtags this year.

#AFL came in third, while #F1, perhaps spurred on by the popularity of Netflix’s Drive To Survivedocumentary series, finished fourth.

Of the top 10 most frequently occurring hashtags in Australia overall, three were related to sport – #Tokyo2020 (5th), #NRL (9th) and #AFL (10th). The top two spots were taken up by #auspol and #Covid-19, and Aussie fans of Korean boy band BTS made their voices heard, with #BTS also finishing on the podium.

All eight of the most popular athletes on Twitter within Australia had an international presence – maligned NBA star Ben Simmons finished atop the charts, with F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo and Aussie cricketer David Warner in second and third.

Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Nick Kyrgios, Patty Mills and Ash Barty rounded out the top eight.

According to HypeAuditor data, both Warner and Ricciardo were also among Australia’s top-growing celebrities on Instagram this year – Warner gained more than 2.5 million Instagram followers, the most of any Australian celebrity, while Ricciardo picked up just shy of two million.

Cricket Australia’s YouTube account enjoyed a similar surge in traction, picking up 1.5 million followers – the most of any Australian brand or individual.

“It’s certainly been a big year for cricket in Australia, with many individual players, teams, and playing bodies popping up in the most gained followers categories across Instagram and YouTube,” HypeAuditor chief executive and co-founder Alexander Frolov said.

“Whether a coincidence or a concerted digital marketing effort is behind it, Australian cricketers were dominant across the influencer space this year.

“A series of much talked-about scandals and triumphs, combined with the highly anticipated summer of cricket ahead, has cemented the success of the sport in the social media space.”
