Northampton put up strong title defence against Geraldton in Batavia bowls women’s pennants as away sides rule

The third round of Batavia Bowling League’s women’s pennants produced ultra-competitive results last Thursday, with the away side winning all three fixtures for the first time this season.

Northampton are putting up a spirited defence of their pennant and their squad completed a hat-trick of wins with a one-shot aggregate victory (36-35) this round against a quality Geraldton Gold combination.

Kaye Burton guided her side of Pauline Forrester, Karen Drage and Eva Watson to a match-defining 19-17 result over Fay Sudilowski, Annette Foster, Sue Smith and Phyllis Hayward to lead the Rams to a 3-1 win. Norma Follington, Pam Batten, Barbara Grieve and Mary Perry gave the home side every opportunity, but fell short by the narrowest of margins with a nailbiting 18-17 win over the quality of Dion Dellamotte, Lyn Joyce, Anne Labruyere and Julie Clarkson.

Wonthella Gold took their third win in as many matches to retain top billing on the table, the two-shot, 3-1 (42-40) victory over third-placed Denison keeping them half a point ahead of Northampton and four clear of their opponent.

Irene Travaskis, Paula Cripps, Pat Rowell and Julie Clarke set the tone with a 25-17 win against Pat Belcher, Anne Doy, Robyn Watts and Gloria Nelson.

The league’s only undefeated player after three games, Marie Eaton, won 28-23 with her team of Sandy Crabb, Anne Carlshausen and Lisa Downing to obtain a valuable premiership point. Geraldton Blue gained a 3-1 (48-38) aggregate result against bottom side Wonthella Maroon.

The Blues’ maiden result for the season was set by the 28-13 victory by Jill Adam, Lyn Penn, Sue Walden and Judy Rosser over the quartet guided by Val Exten. Maroon’s Dorothy Stokes, Sandra Brown, Lyn Sutton and Helen Miller had a solid 25-20 win over Audrey Williamson in the split rink result.

In second division, all four matches went to the home side. Unbeaten Denison Blue won 4-0 (49-24) over Wonthella Gold, Geraldton Blue 51-35 over Wonthella Maroon 51-35 and Geraldton Gold 45-29 over Northampton.
