New principal brings positive beliefs

St Joseph’s Primary School in Waroona has an eager and excited new principal to go hand in hand with the new school year.

Michael O’Dwyer will lead the school of 154 students in 2020. His teaching philosophy is built around harmony, belonging and a positive learning environment.

He believes learning should be made fun, uplifting and interactive.

He also said he was thrilled about the recent renovations the school had undergone.

“This whole new space is about children learning, growing and developing, it is such an important part of our mission statement,” Mr O’Dwyer said.

“It’s important for the children to have growth in affordable, quality education.”

Mr O’Dwyer had not always intended to pursue teaching. He said he originally studied commerce at university, but later felt a strong calling in education.

“My wife Tracy was a teacher so I had a fair bit to do with education. I then started teaching at the same school as her and Catholic Education identified me as a possible leader so I did several leadership programs and courses which got me where I am today,” he said.

He has since taught every grade except kindergarten and was previously the assistant principal at St Bernadette’s Catholic College in Port Kennedy and the acting principal at St Joseph’s in Pinjarra.

Mr O’Dwyer said he was looking forward to the school year and Waroona was a beautiful town.

“I love Waroona, parents have been coming up and introducing themselves, there is nothing like a country community to really make you feel at home,” he said.
