New NBL team name Tasmania Jack Jumpers cops heat on social media

Tasmania has reportedly settled on Jack Jumpers for their new NBL team nickname – and plenty on social media aren’t impressed.

The Tassie side will become the 10th team in the competition when they enter for the 2021-22 campaign, ending a more than two-decade hoops exile for the Apple Isle.

But after word leaked that the franchise had picked Jack Jumpers over Tridents for their moniker, there was instant backlash online, including from Aussie basketball greats Chris Anstey and Andrew Bogut.

“The NBL takes a great step back into Tasmania, then calls them the Jack Jumpers? My goodness,” Anstey tweeted, with a ‘face palm’ emoji.

“Joking yeah? Good one. Got me good,” replied Bogut.

The Jack Jumper is a venomous black-and-orange ant found predominantly in Tasmania, possessing an unusual ability to jump.

Tasmania’s previous NBL team had been known as the Hobart Tassie Devils, but with the club understood to want to steer clear of AFL Tasmania’s Devils name, they underwent a process to find a new nickname.

The Tridents, Timbers, Mountaineers and Pride were all overlooked in favour of Jack Jumpers.

Comedian Titus O’Reily joined the chorus of those panning the name, with others chipping in ahead of the expected official confirmation in the coming days.
