New gender and identity guidelines urge Catholic schools to provide unisex bathrooms, flexible uniforms

New guidelines for Catholic schools say they should provide a unisex toilet and changeroom area “not aligned to biological sex” to alleviate anxiety for vulnerable students experiencing “gender incongruence”.

The guide for Catholic schools on identity and gender, released on Tuesday by Australian Catholic Bishops, also urges schools to offer flexibility with uniform expectations to cater to diverse students.

It said school policies should ensure that all student records should state their biological sex at the point of enrolment.

But a student’s preferred name, “felt gender” and use of personal pronouns could also be noted in the records.

The guidelines said school sports and physical education should be inclusive and free from discrimination for all students.
