Voters fill out their ballots at the Boulder County Clerk’s Office in Boulder on Nov. 8.

The Boulder City Council will convene a new working group and task it with examining ways the city’s election laws can be more “airtight” on several fronts.

The council made the decision at its final meeting of 2017 — a year that saw an unusually high level of concern and confusion regarding local election laws, and particularly regarding the financial reporting requirements, and lack thereof, that campaign committees in Boulder must satisfy.

City Manager Jane Brautigam said she would issue a call early next year for those interested in participating in the group, which will include a mix of citizens, representatives of civic institutions and election experts.

The group will be asked to meet in the first few months of 2018, then present recommendations and observations to the council midway through the year, in time for the council to consider potential charter amendments for next year’s ballot, as well as ordinances it may want to pass on its own.
