New all-terrain wheelchair on the way for the City of Karratha to bolster inclusivity

The purchase of a new purpose-built wheelchair will soon bolster opportunities for people living with disability in Karratha to connect with the wider community and participate in recreational activities.

A dozen grant recipients across the State will receive funding totalling $100,000 to purchase all-terrain wheelchairs for public use at locations including beaches, national parks and wilderness trails.

The City of Karratha will receive nearly $10,000 to purchase an all-terrain wheelchair and access mat which will be stored at the Karratha Visitor Centre.

Disability Services Minister Don Punch said the diversity of grant recipients showed all-terrain wheelchairs could be a great asset to a community.

“Having access to the outdoor environment and the activities that go with it is a key part of an inclusive community and I am pleased WA communities will be more accessible and inclusive thanks to the delivery of this election commitment,’ he said.

The wheelchairs will assist people with mobility impairments to access areas where traditional wheelchairs cannot operate and are designed for outdoor environments including sand, gravel and water.
