Union Brewing and Distillery owner Steve Ryan needs a car to carry his precious cargo — and lots of it.
Getting the carefully crafted specialty beers, ciders and spirits from his Myalup Distillery is critical work.
What are you driving and why did you buy it?
I’m driving aRenault Kangoo Maxi Van Diesel — it’s a stupid name for a good van. I’m driving it because I can fit 13 full kegs in the back (plus a few empties), it drives like a car even when fully loaded, fits in my garage, and is very economical to run.
What was your first car?
A white 1970 HG Holden Kingswood. It belonged to my grandfather. I have fond memories of sleeping on the bench seats on surfing trips down south. It was stolen twice, had no heater, let alone air-conditioning, and it overheated a lot.
What’s your Dream Car?
A beige 1977 Datsun 620 King Cab Ute.
What annoys you most about other motorists?
Lack of courtesy. I think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they behave when driving in the protective cocoon of their vehicle.
What’s your favourite driving music?
The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Buffalo Springfield, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Jolie Holland and The Lemonheads.
