Manning-based software engineer and Textstopper chief executive Steve Metlitzky has always loved motorsport, first racing a VW Golf Mk1 in South Africa before coming to Australia, where he fell into the allure of the Lotus world
What are you driving and why did you buy it?
A Series 1 Lotus Elise. This is my third Elise, having previously owned two race cars. Unfortunately, I had a motorsport accident in Albany in June 2018, which put an end to my hobby. While in hospital, I decided to sell the race cars but realised I still had a passion and so bought this Elise as my project car. I love it because it is super-lightweight; even though it only has 150hp (110kW), it is magic to drive with legendary Lotus handling.
What’s your Dream Car?
My dream car is a Pagani Zonda, a rare Italian supercar with a unique combination of outrageous styling and fantastic performance. They are literally works of art and I have been lucky enough to visit the factory in Italy.
What was your first car?
My mum’s Alfa Romeo Alfetta, which at the time I thought was amazing. It was a beautiful deep blue with a fantastic-sounding exhaust. Being a car enthusiast, I decided one day to dismantle the carburettors to give them a clean and for the life of me had no idea how to reassemble them. Thankfully, my dad came to the rescue.
What annoys you most about other motorists?
Having a business related to distracted driving has brought me in direct contact with families of victims and I’ve learnt the huge impact a single moment of inattention can bring. This, and people not saying thanks when you let them in.
What’s your favourite driving music?
It depends on my mood, so if I’m feeling a bit melancholy, it will be something like Halsey. If I’m feeling upbeat then, weirdly, it’s back to the 80s for a bit of Yazoo.
