Muldejewangk to showcase Australia in Mexico

It seems judges made a good choice when they selected Abby Wegener as a winner of the Perth heat of an international cocktail-making competition last month — even though she was from Adelaide.

Wegener was one of two bartenders who took out the regional heat of the global Patron Perfectionists Cocktail Competition held at Mexican bar and restaurant El Grotto in Scarborough.

Three West Australian bartenders went head to head with two from South Australia and one from the Northern Territory when they created cocktails based on their country.

Last year’s Australian winner, David Robinson, from Hot Tamale in NT, was a joint winner with Wegener, from Hades Hula House.

The two competed against other regional winners in last night’s national final in Sydney, where Wegener was announced the Australian winner.

She will represent her country in January when she goes up against other national winners from 18 nations in Patron Perfectionists’ global final in Mexico.

Wegener’s winning cocktail, The Muldejewangk (muldge-u-wink), was inspired by ancient stories about a monster.

The South Australian said she was excited about representing her country at the Mexico competition.

“I can’t believe that eight months after opening my own bar and shaking my first cocktail, that I can be in this position,” she said.

“I feel very blessed and excited to represent all the female bartenders and, of course, the tiki bartenders out there.”
