Mount Lawley amateur Kirsten Rudgeley planning to embrace the moment at Augusta National Women’s Amateur

Mount Lawley amateur Kirsten Rudgeley gets the opportunity of a lifetime over the next few days when she competes at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur in the US.

The 21-year-old will lock horns with 71 of the world’s best female amateur golfers in Georgia, with the renowned Augusta National, host course of the Masters, the venue for the final round.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said Rudgeley, who begins her first round on Wednesday.

“It’s not often you get to play in an event like this.

“It’s awesome because as a female, it’s the only way you get to play competitive golf at Augusta National.

“It’s a cool experience.”

Rudgeley was invited to the tournament after charging up the world amateur rankings last year, winning the English and Scottish Amateur and finishing runner-up to Grace Kim at the Australian Amateur.

She also made her first start in a major after qualifying for the British Open at Carnoustie.

Currently ranked 44th in the world amateur rankings, Rudgeley has been busy over the summer preparing for her tilt at Augusta.

She finished seventh at the Vic Open and WPGA Championship and beat Australia’s leading women pros at The Athena in Melbourne in February.

The first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament will be played at the Champions Retreat course just outside Augusta.

The top 30 players will progress to the final round at Augusta National on Saturday, however, the entire field gets to play a practice round at the famous Masters layout on Friday.

Rudgeley said she will be relying on some local Augusta knowledge to make her job easier this week.

“The club provide us with their local caddies,” Rudgeley said.

American world No.1 amateur Rose Zhang, who finished third last year to Japan’s Tsubasa Kajitani, is the favourite.

The winner will gain a start in this year’s Women’s US Open and Women’s British Opens.
