Colchester maintained their impressive start to the season with a battling 1-0 victory against injury-hit Morecambe.
The visitors had the better of things in the early stages with Harry Pell heading a left-wing cross wide in the third minute before firing a tame shot straight at goalkeeper Barry Roche from the edge of the box.
Ryan Jackson drilled a shot over the crossbar from a tight angle after another good Colchester move.
The visitors opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a well-worked goal. Morecambe lost possession cheaply on the halfway line and Courtney Senior ran at the defence, shared a one-two with Luke Norris and slotted the ball under Roche.
After a sterile first half the second saw much more goalmouth action, with Morecambe dominating possession.
The Shrimps were denied what looked a clear penalty for handball after a goalmouth scramble at the far post, but the closest they came to a goal was when Vadaine Oliver hit the crossbar from close range after a fine Ajay Leitch-Smith cross.
Aaron Wildig’s poor cross when Kevin Ellison and Oliver were free at the far post proved costly and despite Morecambe’s relenting pressure, Colchester held on to claim the three points.
