Last year’s winner Monbeg Notorious is among an entry of 47 for the Goffs Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park on Thursday week.

Trained by Gordon Elliott, Monbeg Notorious provided his handler with a first win in the historic contest – before going on to take the Ten Up Novice Chase and then finish second in Grade One company to stablemate The Storyteller at Punchestown.

He is one of an entry of 10 from Elliott, that also includes joint top-weight Mala Beach, Alpha Des Obeaux, General Principle and Grand National dark horse Borice.

Willie Mullins also has a huge entry – with Total Recall, Pleasant Company, Invitation Only and Up For Review among his squad.

Valseur Lido, Sumos Novios, Any Second Now and Mr Diablo are other notable contenders away from the two powerhouse yards.

There are two entries from Britain, both trained by David Pipe – Tommy Whittle winner Daklondike and Welsh National runner-up Ramses De Teillee.

Eddie Scally, general manager of Gowran Park, said: “We are delighted to see such a competitive-looking field gearing up for our 2019 Goffs Thyestes Chase.

“Monbeg Notorious will no doubt prove very popular on the day with punters after his 2018 exploits but no doubt he will have plenty to worry about with the highly rated Mala Beach and Total Recall also in the entry list.

“It’s exciting to see David Pipe with two entries for the race, most notably Ramses De Teillee who was just touched off in the Welsh National over Christmas.

“Fingers crossed, we will see enough rain over the coming weeks to keep ground conditions perfect for the big day – and hopefully another thrilling Goffs Thyestes Chase.”
