Mid West finalists in tidy towns awards

The Mid West cleaned up in last year’s Tidy Towns Awards and this year it’s poised do it again, with three finalists across three categories.

Geraldton was taken to the cleaners last year by Denham in the litter prevention and waste management category, but this year the City is the category’s only Mid West finalist.

Much of this status is owed to the Gero Clean Up Crew. The troop of volunteers has been stepping out at least once a month to pick up litter in bushlands and roadsides, as well as clearing bushland weeds.

Carnamah got props in two categories, including in environmental sustainability.

The community came together after cyclone Seroja to plant a stretch of salmon gum trees, replacing trees felled by the storm. The Carnamah museum also got a nod for recent upgrades, which includes a touchscreen computer, with wi-fi connection provided by the North Midlands Project.

Mullewa’s 125th anniversary celebrations has it competing with Carnamah in the heritage and culture category.

A lack of record keeping in the town’s early history has meant many graves at the town’s cemetery have been lost to time. A working group was formed and through careful research a memorial wall was opened, honouring early pioneers and Yamatji people side by side.
