Micallef “all class” as he takes out 600m men’s race at Leonora Golden Gift

A strong field of athletes competed in the open 600m men’s race at the Leonora Golden Gift, with Jared Micallef upping the ante in the final 50m to win the race.

Commentators described the competitors as “a calibre we’ve never seen before”, and the race gun resounded in the air to start the runners on their way.

Micallef led the pack from the starting line, with Niall Tuohy and Alain Dutton chasing hard behind him.

Five-time WA 400m champion Adam Copp kicked into gear and began working hard but Micallef was “all class” and was “too good”, crossing the finish line first in 1min. 22sec., ahead of Copp in 1min. 23sec.

Nathanael Taylor overtook Tuohy to grab third in 1min. 25sec.

“When you have a 600 metre run, you’ve gotta get out quick and it just really tests the lactic at the end,” Micallef said.
