Men’s State Cup final: Fresh camera angle sheds new light on controversial penalty call at end of final

A new camera angle has shed more light on the controversial penalty call which handed Cockburn a cup final triumph and split Perth’s soccer community down the middle.

Armadale goalkeeper Yousri Gharsallah easily collected a ball in the dying stages of the State Cup final on Sunday, but as he launched forward to take it, Cockburn’s Jeff Bright came flying past, before dramatically writhing in pain inside the box.

A penalty was awarded for the incident, which to the naked eye on the broadcast appeared bizarre, but the new angle, released by Football West in the wake of the final, shows Gharsallah’s trailling leg caught Bright near the groin.

Now the referee is being lauded for his composure and conviction in pointing to the spot and sending the ‘keeper off, knowing it would almost certainly decide the game.
