Meghan Markle dumps protocol for bump-friendly black

New Yorkers are doing it. So are all the cool kids, fashion types, artists and architects. Lately, the Duchess of Sussex is, too. Wearing black, that is — and it’s fuelling the anti-Meghan outcry.

Since announcing she is expecting her first child with Prince Harry in the British spring, black has been her go-to colour for several recent official appearances.

But despite it being practical, flattering and easy to mix-and-match, some traditionalists are raising eyebrows because the colour is widely considered a departure from royal protocol.

The Queen, for one, dresses brightly.

Video2018 has been a special year and even more so as it was host to the Royal wedding, joining Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in lawful wedded bliss.

And since Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, has embraced Her Majesty’s love for co-ordination and bright colours, critics have found even more reason to label her sister-in-law’s attire inappropriate.

Fashion expert Wendy Marshall, owner of Elle Boutique in Nedlands, says it is horribly unfair the glamorous American has to deal with criticism over her fashion choices — particularly given black has been synonymous with timeless chic for decades.

She said wearing black could be considered a thoughtful choice because it lessens the chances of the outfit stealing the limelight from the people and causes she is championing.

Ms Marshall said black was a sensible option when pregnant.

“Some pregnant women love having a tummy and showing it off,” she said. “When Meghan did the Australian tour she wore colourful outfits but she probably feels like wearing black more now because some women do feel uncomfortable when they are having a baby and have a growing tummy.”

“Black always makes you look slimmer. It makes you disappear.

“Meghan wore a lot of camel before she married Harry. She used to wear white and cream as well and all those neutral colours.

“But those colours are not the best when you have a big tummy because you look like a refrigerator.”
