Fire and emergency crews Saturday were opening up some areas evacuated due a Friday wildfire that has burned 3,300 acres near the Fort Carson training area.
The Carson Midway Fire is 80 percent contained, said officials. The fire spread quickly Friday near Indian Village Heights and Armadillo Heights on the southeast corner of the training area. Firefighters continued to use air tankers and helicopter drops to battle the blaze Friday.
At least 250 homes were evacuated and structures, including homes, have been destroyed but a specific number has not been released.
Officials Saturday said they were prepared to open up the Midway Ranch and Hanover areas for many evacuated residents. However, there are still a few locations where the evacuation will remain in effect for the safety of residents who live there.
For those who can’t return home, the Red Cross shelter will remain open at the Fountain Valley Baptist Church in Fountain. Case workers were available at that location until 7 p.m. For Red Cross services or assistance after that, evacuees can call 800-417-0495. Case workers are also available at the chapter office Sunday, located at 1040 S. 8th St., in Colorado Springs.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
