A manslaughter charge has been laid after a man who was assaulted at a Victorian service station died in hospital.

Troy Maskell, 42, faced Shepparton Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged over the death of a 73-year-old Strathmerton man.

Maskell, from Numurkah, had previously been charged with assault offences over an incident at a service station on the Murray Valley Highway near Shepparton in the early hours of August 8.

The older man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He died on October 28.

Maskell was charged with manslaughter on Wednesday.

Prosecutors have until January to prepare the evidence against him. He’s due back in court on March 15.

A 46-year-old Numurkah woman is also facing assault charges and is due back in court on December 10.
