Management hit in further Ausgrid job cuts

Energy provider Ausgrid will cut senior management positions in addition to hundreds of jobs already on the chopping block.

The company on Monday confirmed the reduction of about 16 roles, or 20 per cent of its management, citing financial pressures worsened by COVID-19.

“This proposed restructure will mostly impact our management teams and back office staff, no frontline jobs will be cut,” Ausgrid CEO Richard Gross said in a statement.

“This means staff working on the poles and wires and in the customer call centre will not be reduced as part of this restructure.”

Ausgrid announced plans in 2019 to shed up to 500 staff in stages stretching through until 2021.

There were already some 230 “back office” jobs due to go in January 2021.

“We’ve been talking to our staff and the unions about the need to be more financially efficient for over 18 months,” Mr Gross said.

“While we have implemented a number of initiatives to achieve cost reductions, we have been open and honest that reducing our labour costs was also going to be necessary.”

The company is the largest distributor of electricity on Australia’s east coast, supplying power to about 1.8 million customers.
