A predator who subjected his stepdaughter to a decade-long reign of “humiliating and degrading” sexual abuse that started when she was aged six was yesterday jailed for 10 years.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, repeatedly molested his stepdaughter in their family home until just after her 17th birthday.
He preyed on the girl when she was sleeping, plied her with shots of alcohol before abusing her and forced her to expose herself when she made mistakes during driving lessons.
The stepfather used blackmail and pressure to force the girl to comply with his requests, warning that she would ruin the family if she told anyone and threatening to take his own life.
District Court Judge Simon Stone described the man’s actions as persistent, deliberate and repetitive before jailing him for 10 years yesterday.
He told the court the victim became conditioned to the abuse as her stepfather turned her into a sexual object for his own sexual needs. Judge Stone said the man breached the trust of his wife and his stepdaughter, who looked up to him as a father.
“You destroyed the childhood of your stepdaughter,” he said.
“You split the family. It was an horrific ordeal for her.”
The man was convicted of six counts of indecently dealing with a child and 10 counts of sexually penetrating a child after a trial in April.
Judge Stone said the abuser was still in denial and blamed everyone but himself for his wrongdoings.
In her victim impact statement, the stepdaughter said the crimes had a traumatic impact on her and took away her childhood innocence.
She said the court process forced her to relive the abuse and made her destructive behaviour worse.
“I had to tell people in detail about everything that happened,” she wrote.
“It made me see the amount of hurt that everyone else has been through as well and that’s really hard to watch.”
The man’s sentence was backdated to April. He will be eligible for parole in eight years.
