Man injured as debris smashes through windscreen on Bussell Highway

UPDATE: A man is fighting for life in Royal Perth Hospital after debris from a boat smashed through the front of his car in WA’s South West.

The man’s vehicle was behind a white four-wheel-drive towing a boat when debris flew from the trailer through the front of the car on the Bussell Highway just after 1pm.

Witnesses reported seeing the man, aged in his 40s, pinned inside his vehicle as passersby stopped to help.

Two children and a woman were also inside the vehicle at the time. Luckily they escaped injury.

According to police, a second vehicle on the Bussell Highway was also struck by an object from the boat trailer, but the driver failed to stop and continued travelling southbound.

Hours after an appeal was put out to locate the driver of the white four-wheel-drive, police advised a man made contact with them after he arrived at his destination.

The Bussell Highway remains closed in both directions at Layman Road as police and emergency crews are at the scene.

Firefighters from Busselton and Bunbury worked to free the man before he was loaded onto the rescue helicopter and flown to Perth around 2.45pm on Friday.

The man is described as having serious injuries.

Anyone who saw the crash or the white four-wheel-drive towing the boat beforehand is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report it online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au

In a separate crash, the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway is closed in both directions after a road train rollover on Friday afternoon.

The driver of the road train escaped injury when the trailer tipped over at the Hyden Norseman Road intersection.

A police spokesperson said the highway was closed about 35km north of Norseman.
