Magpie Maynard pleads for De Goey to stay

Brayden Maynard has made the biggest public plea yet from a Collingwood player to Jordan De Goey as the Magpies free agent weighs up his AFL future.

De Goey has attracted interest from a number of rivals, with St Kilda’s board recently ticking off the Saints football department’s interest in the 26-year-old.

The off-contract star has been considering his future since Collingwood took a lucrative four-year contract offer off the table following an ill-fated trip to Bali in June.

But De Goey has stayed out of trouble since the mid-season bye and has played a crucial role in the Magpies’ scintillating finals charge.

Maynard, who secured his first All-Australian selection this week, is desperate for De Goey to remain at Collingwood beyond September.

“He’s not going anywhere, I’ll make sure of that,” Maynard said at Collingwood’s open training session on Friday.

“I haven’t really had a conversation with him because I don’t want to be another voice in his ear.

“I’m sure they’ll work something out because he’s really wanted and I feel like all the boys benefit from playing alongside him.”

De Goey starred during Collingwood’s run to the 2018 grand final and he shapes as a matchwinner in the Magpies’ qualifying final clash with minor premiers Geelong on September 3.

“(De Goey) had a couple of weeks on the sidelines there, but it was a good little break for him as well, mentally and physically,” Maynard said.

Collingwood’s confidence is sky high after winning 12 of their last 13 games to secure an unlikely top-four berth.

It has been a dramatic turnaround for the club after finishing 17th last season, with first-year coach Craig McRae sparking the group back up the ladder.

“It’s amazing,” Maynard said.

“To come from 17th to top-four is just a credit to (Magpies football manager) Graham Wright in getting the coaching staff and for the players to adapt to the game style we want to go by.”
