Former Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has ranked David Mundy as the second best player in club history behind only Matthew Pavlich as he prepares to play his 350th AFL game.
Mundy will become just the 18th person to play 350 VFL/AFL matches when the Dockers face Sydney at Metricon Stadium on Sunday.
A 2010 Doig medallist and 2015 All-Australian, Mundy also finished third in voting for the 2013 Norm Smith Medal.
While Dockers captain Nat Fyfe has won two Brownlow Medals, two AFLP MVP awards, is a three-time All-Australian and three-time Doig medallist, Lyon said Mundy’s sustained excellence had earned him the right to be above Fyfe in the pecking order at Fremantle.
“Outside of Pav, he’s the greatest Docker ever to this point,” Lyon told Footy Classified.
“How do you separate greatness? Nathan’s got a few more years to deliver and hopefully Nathan can drag them to that premiership.”
Mundy took over as Fremantle captain after Pavlich retired but led the club for only one season before Fyfe assumed the role.
Lyon referenced Mundy’s ability to handle the pressure late in games with a goal after the siren against Richmond lifting Fremantle to victory and another goal with less than one minute remaining in a different game against the Tigers also winning his team the game.
Mundy signed a one-year contract this week which will allow him to not only overtake Pavlich as Fremantle’s games record holder this season, but surge clear next year and open the door for him to chase 400 matches in future season.
Lyon said Mundy’s skill under physical pressure and durability to continue playing despite constant travel made his milestone extraordinary
“His football character and ability to compete week in and week out and prepare himself. His toughness around the ball, he’s clean, his ability to use the ball, bring his teammates in and make them better (make him elite),” Lyon said.
“When you think of the flying they do, it is astronomical.”
Mundy is currently ranked ninth in the AFL Coaches’ Association award and despite turning 36 this week, Mundy has played every game this season.
