Lower Chittering: Out-of-control blaze sparked behind Immaculate Heart College

A bushfire has sparked in Perth’s northern suburbs with firefighters on the scene battling the out-of-control blaze.

Fire fighters were called to the grass fire that sparked behind Immaculate Heart College in Lower Chittering about 3.15pm.

Multiple DFES appliances are at the scene battling the blaze, which is burning near Muchea East Road and Santa Gertrudis Drive.

An air support crew, consisting of a bomber and two choppers, has been dispatched to the fire front.

It comes as fire fighters are tirelessly battling the out-of-control bushfire in Margaret River, which police believe was deliberately lit.

The blaze has already destroyed 5,500 ha of land as of Saturday afternoon, and is expected to burn longer as it remains not contained and out of control.

Detectives from Strike Force Vulcan, WA’s bushfire and arson unit, joined local police in the investigation into the fire which has burnt through 5,500 ha of land.

According to a police statement released on Saturday, initial police assessments indicate the inferno was deliberately lit.

“Based on an initial assessment of the fire scene it is believed the fire was deliberately lit and may have been ignited near Mammoth Cave,” the statement said.

“Detectives would like to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Mammoth Cave on Wednesday December 8 or who has dash cam or mobile phone vision of people or vehicles in the area at the time.”
