Local emergency responders rewarded in WA Fire and Emergency Services Awards

Local heroes have been recognised as finalists for the Western Australian Fire and Emergency Services Awards were announced Friday.

The awards acknowledge contribution emergency services personnel make to WA, particularly volunteers.

There are 13 awards across three categories, individual, team and youth encompassing firefighting, Marine Rescue and State Emergency Services.

DFES district officer Brendan Wilson has been nominated for his service to emergency management in the Mid West Gascoyne while Marine Rescue Geraldton has been nominated in the team awards category.

Marine Rescue Jurien Bay has also been nominated in the team category, while Jurien Bay’s Chrissy Heu is up for the marine rescue individual achievement award.

Ms Heu was one of a two-person crew who rescued a group of men whose vessel was in distress in stormy weather off the coast of Jurien Bay in May.

Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson congratulated the finalists for their support of communities.

“Each year, nearly 26,000 volunteers and 1600 operational personnel work tirelessly to protect WA communities,” he said.

“These individuals and groups demonstrate exceptional professionalism, leadership and commitment in their roles and I look forward to their invaluable contributions being recognised with these awards.”

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Saturday, September 10 at Crown Perth.
