Living independently with incapacity: Sam’s story

An independent life powers you with confidence and self-esteem. Feeling independent gives a sense of purpose, achievement, control, and self-worth, and contributes to optimal health and wellbeing.

In other words: independence is fundamental for a fulfilling life.

Most of us, regardless of circumstances, have access to opportunities to elevate our independence.

Sam who is in her 50’s and living with a physical disability, enjoys living independently in Perth’s beautiful suburb of Bayswater.

She lives at Winifred, a stylish, contemporary living space that has been designed as specialist disability accommodation (SDA). SDA is housing designed for people with acute functional impairment, or very high support needs.

“I looked into SDA because I wanted to be more independent, and that’s hard when you’re sharing your bathroom and kitchen with other adults,” Sam said.

“For the first time, I was able to decorate a lounge room and kitchen how I wanted.”

Style, comfort and control

SDA housing is designed for comfort, function, and control to support people with disability to live confidently, however they choose. There are stylish and affordable SDA homes in lots of sought-after locations in WA.

Think: modern kitchens with accessible design features and quality appliances, smart technology, and spacious living areas. All designed to optimise an independent lifestyle.

“My quality of life has improved because I am able to do whatever I would like to do, without having to fit in with housemates’ lifestyles and choices,” Sam said.

“I can dance to the beat of my own drum.”

Location and community

Sam said location and accessibility to public transport is a “big plus” for maintaining an independent lifestyle.

“For example, have a look at your community access, things like the state of the nearby footpaths, the coffee shops and grocery stores nearby to make sure you have a few options in the range of your wheelchair.”

Sam encouraged other people living with disability to consider SDA and enjoy the process of obtaining a new home.

There are so many new and high-quality homes across Perth to choose from. Together with Ability WA, explore your goals and where and how you want to live so you can be supported to live a greater, more connected, independent life.

“Make sure you know what’s included when you sign up to an SDA house, for example, which equipment is automated and what’s not automated,” she said.

“And enjoy, it’s a wonderful milestone!”

Ability WA has partnered with Perth’s most trusted SDA providers to offer some amazing living spaces, including the Bayswater Winifred development. Visit the Ability WA website to find out more.
