Lewandowski-Messi-Ronaldo award battle | The West Australian

Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski has been included on a three-man shortlist for FIFA’s best men’s player award, along with multiple global winners Lionel Messi, the holder, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Dane Pernille Harder, England’s Lucy Bronze and France’s Wendie Renard make up the top three on the equivalent women’s list.

This year’s recipients will be announced next Thursday in a virtual ceremony.

Lewandowski is favourite to win the men’s accolade after his goals led Bayern to a sweep of titles this year – the Champions League, the German league, the German Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

One of his 55 goals last season came in Bayern’s 8-2 rout of Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Lewandowski could become only the second player – after Luka Modric in 2018 – to deny Messi or Ronaldo since their run of world best player awards started in 2008.

Messi has been crowned six times and Ronaldo five.

Lewandowski has already won the Germany and UEFA player of the season awards.

Marcelo Bielsa has been acclaimed for his achievement in bringing Leeds back to the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp for leading Liverpool to the title but Hansi Flick is favourite for the men’s coaching award after leading Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga/German Cup/Champions League treble.

Other awards shortlists:

The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker (Brazil/Liverpool), Manuel Neuer (Germany/Bayern Munich), Jan Oblak (Slovenia/Atletico Madrid)

The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper: Sarah Bouhaddi (France/Olympique Lyonnais), Christiane Endler (Chile/Paris Saint-Germain), Alyssa Naeher (US/Chicago Red Stars)

The Best FIFA Women’s Coach: Emma Hayes (England/Chelsea), Jean-Luc Vasseur (France/Olympique Lyonnais), Sarina Wiegman (Netherlands/Dutch national team)
