Leverkusen power into Champions League

Patrik Schick has scored twice to shoot Bayer Leverkusen into the Champions League with a 4-2 win at Hoffenheim.

In Saturday’s Bundesliga action, Freiburg had their own Champions League hopes dampened with a 4-1 trouncing by Union Berlin.

With their win, Union have secured at least a place in the Europa Conference League for the second season in a row after already achieving their best Bundesliga season.

Sixth-placed Union, who were promoted only in 2019, have a two-point lead over Cologne – 1-0 losers at home to Wolfsburg – in their tussle for Europa League qualification.

Hertha Berlin failed to secure their survival as they lost at home to Mainz 2-1.

Elsewhere, second-placed Borussia Dortmund won 3-1 at already relegated Greuther Furth in Stefan Leitl’s last game as Furth coach after three-and-a-half years in charge.

Leverkusen were made to work hard for their result against Hoffenheim but Schick took his tally to 24 goals in 26 league appearances to win the day.

Leverkusen twice came from behind to secure third place, irrespective of what happens in their final game against Freiburg next weekend.

Freiburg’s defeat has given Leipzig the chance to move to fourth by avoiding defeat at home to Augsburg on Sunday.

Freiburg, who also face Leipzig in the German Cup final on May 21, were rocked by three first-half goals from Union.

Despite defeat at home to Wolfsburg, Cologne clinched qualification for the Europa Conference League due to Hoffenheim’s defeat.

Hertha missed the chance to clinch survival after being outplayed by a Mainz team playing mainly for pride. Even so, Hertha’s Davie Selke had a second equaliser ruled out for a push on a defender.

Champions Bayern Munich can still do Hertha a favour on Sunday by beating relegation rivals Stuttgart.
