Kids aged 12 can get Pfizer jab: EU agency

The coronavirus vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech can be used for children aged 12 and up, according to the European Medicines Agency.

Marco Cavalleri, the regulatory body’s director for vaccine strategies, said on Friday the data showed that the vaccine was safe for children and seems to be effective in helping them resist infection, with no signs of serious side effects.

The decision makes the vaccine the first set to be approved for anyone under age 16 in Europe.

The European Commission must still sign off on the EMA ruling but that is considered a formality.

The Pfizer-BioNTech jab has already been approved for use by children in the US and Canada.

Moderna has also submitted its vaccine for approval for the young.

Countries like Germany had already prepared the way for a start of vaccination for minors, with the cabinet agreeing on Thursday to start vaccinations for children aged 12 and up starting on June 7.

However, the country’s health regulator has hinted it might not be prepared to sign off on the use of the vaccine for juveniles.

As ever more adults are vaccinated across Europe, the question has turned to whether it is safe to vaccinate children as well.

Many vaccinated parents have worried that the lockdown will continue so long as juveniles can still carry and pass on the disease.
