Katanning Bowling Club to celebrate centenary at new home

The Katanning Bowling Club will celebrate 100 years on Sunday, with the club’s first major competition to be held on the fresh greens of Katanning Country Club.

The centenary celebration will see about 60 club members compete in a three-round mixed-fours event at the club’s new home.

Ladies captain Bernadette Bradley said the day would be an opportunity for the community to see the new venue in action.

“We hope to cut a centenary cake acknowledging that 100 years ago someone had the foresight to start a bowls club in Katanning,” she said.

“In a country town, sporting venues hold us together.”

Officially opened on December 11, 1920, Katanning Croquet and Bowling Club has been at the heart of the local sporting community since its establishment.

For more than three decades, it was a men’s only club, but in 1954 the ladies’ bowling club officially formed a team and were given permission to bowl on the main rinks.

This year marked a new chapter for the club which relocated from its home of 57 years in Braeside to the new grounds of Katanning Country Club.

The new facility, yet to be officially opened, is set to be a family-friendly hub for Katanning sport bringing together bowling, golf, tennis and squash.

The centenary celebration begins at 9.30am at Katanning Country Club on December 6.
