The organisers of this year’s Starlight Children’s Foundation fundraiser say they are more focused on providing a relaxing fun night in support of families of sick children than a fundraising target.
The annual fundraiser founded by Haylie and Phillip Dowson brings together hundreds of locals to support families with seriously ill children who benefit from the Fremantle Dockers’ Starlight Foundation service.
The service provides a positive distraction for chronically and terminally ill children in hospital.
Mrs Dowson said the couple started the event as they had struggled to enjoy a relaxing night out as a couple while caring for their ill child and wanted to offer a special event for families in similar positions.
She said this year’s event sold out in an unprecedented time and she was sorry to those who missed out, but looked forward to enjoying the night with the 499 who scored tickets to Saturday night’s event.
She said she did not want to think about how much could be raised on the night or how much had been raised in the past.
“Numbers this year, numbers last year, it doesn’t matter,” she said.
“If you convert the numbers to families, we have helped a lot of families over the years and that’s a great feeling.
“That’s how I like to think about it. It’s not about the money raised.”
A local family whose young boy has used the Starlight service is expected to speak on the night and several unique auction items will be included in the night’s offerings.
