Junior racers pep up Wagin 1000

The annual Wagin 1000 competition was hosted by the Great Southern Kart Club in Wagin last weekend, and for the first time ever it also featured the junior class.

Juniors 20 Lap Wagin 1000 was the first competition of the event and attracted 30 juniors from all over the state, including current Australian champion Mikey Green and the Crofts brothers, who came in second and third at the recent Northern Territory Titles in Alice Springs.

Great Southern Kart Club president Gareth Keeling said the juniors race was at times frantic but passionate.

“The kids in motorsport of today are well educated and well taught and these WA kids are among the best in Australia,” he said.

Ryan Crofts won the 20-lap final, with Brock Francis finishing second and Blake Curtis in third. Kenneth Puddey finished fourth, followed by Alex Crofts in fifth place and Brendan Newmarch — who also picked up the Team BCM Motorsport Sportsmanship award — in sixth place.

For the seniors Wagin 1000 race, 16 twin karts were initially nominated but due to the date change as a result of severe weather, only 12 competed on the day.

Mr Keeling said it was more than enough for exciting twin dirt-kart action.

Current WA champion Joe Chalmers dominated proceedings, winning three heats, the pole shuffle and the 15-lap Wagin 1000 final.

Chalmers came first overall, with Adrian Krause coming in second, Joel Ettridge as third, Jason White as fourth, Mick Bain as fifth and Lee Austen as sixth.

Mr Keeling said the day was a success and the club put on a great show with plenty of fireworks on and off the track.
