Geraldton racehorse Corn Cob continued a stunning run of form with a fourth win in seven starts on Saturday, taking out the Geoff McPherson Memorial Handicap over 1420m at Geraldton Turf Club.
Trainer Julia Martin, who owns a 10 percent stake in the three-year-old, said the plan had been to spell him after the previous result — but he had pulled up so well they decided to give him another run.
“We thought we’d see how he went over the 1400 again,” Martin said.
“He’ll have a freshen up now and maybe go to Perth in the next month.
She said she was “that grateful” to majority owner Peter Maver for the chance.
McPherson was a long-time president of the turf club and an accomplished trainer.
The handicap is supported by the family of McPherson including his widow, Joy.
“He was a very active Mid West racing identity,” turf club manager David Wrensted said.
“He was chairman for a considerable time, and was a very successful trainer in own right.”
Around 35 members of McPherson’s family were at the track for the race.
