Jorginho howler helps Arsenal down Chelsea

Emile Smith Rowe has taken advantage of a defensive howler to score the winner in Arsenal’s 1-0 Premier League defeat of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Italy midfielder Jorginho’s attempted back pass left out-of-position goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga scrambling to prevent an own goal, diving to palm the ball away just before it crossed the line.

But Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on hand to collect the ball and square it for Smith Rowe, who slotted home just inside the post on 16 minutes.

It was Arsenal’s third straight league victory and a much-needed morale booster after their Europa League semi-final exit left the Gunners without a chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea’s third loss in 26 matches under Thomas Tuchel left them fourth and gave renewed hope to chasing teams West Ham United and Liverpool, who are hoping to snatch the final spot in Europe’s top club competition.

“It’s still in our hands,” Tuchel said with regards to the top-four race.

“It is another chance missed. We have had some good results, so we have to cope now with a loss.”

Christian Pulisic had an effort ruled out for offside in the second half but despite Chelsea’s dominance Arsenal held on to complete the league double over their capital rivals.

A final goalmouth scramble in the 90th minute saw Bernd Leno tip the ball onto the bar from a Kurt Zouma header with substitute striker Olivier Giroud striking the bar from point-blank range with the rebound.

Tuchel made seven changes to keep his players fresh, with Saturday’s FA Cup final against Leicester City clearly in mind and admitted he might have got it wrong.

“It was totally our fault, nobody else’s. We lost the game, it’s totally our responsibility,” he told Sky Sports.

“We had huge chances, we made more or less an own goal, a total gift.

“I think it was maybe too many changes from the last match and I take full responsibility also for that.

“Maybe it’s the last wake-up call for all of us.”
