Jackson makes storming basketball return

Lauren Jackson has made a storming start to her basketball comeback, scoring a combined 57 points in two games.

The Australian great followed Saturday’s 21 points with a 36-point, 15-rebound command performance for her home team Albury-Wodonga Bandits in the semi-professional NBL1.

Now 40, the two-time WNBA champion and three-time MVP has come back six years after a knee injury forced the four-time Olympian to retire.

Jackson has said a fairytale home World Cup return for the Opals cannot be her focus, given the unpredictability of her body.

She led the Opals to the 2006 world championship title.

But Jackson made an immediate impact on Saturday as the Bandits beat the Central Coast Crusaders 78-61, with five 3-pointers as she top-scored for her team, as well as five rebounds and a block.

Jackson then stepped up a gear on Sunday, at times outscoring the Hills Hornets by herself in the Bandits’ 90-51 win.

The Bandits’ next game will be on Saturday when they host the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre.

The women’s World Cup will be held in Sydney in September.
